Bible Lesson Grading
Christian Jail Ministry (CJM) has maintained a Bible correspondence course grading office in Bethel Baptist Church (Ellicott City, MD) since the early 1980s where lessons completed by inmates at the Howard County Detention Center (HCDC) and elsewhere are graded.

A team of volunteers gathers each Thursday morning at the grading office to grade inmate lessons, record the scores, and prepare certificates for inmates completing units of studies. The team also packages lessons for CJM chaplains and volunteers to distribute and performs administrative duties necessary for smooth functioning of the lesson grading office. Shown here is a March 2000 photo (clockwise from left rear) of Nell Matthews, Cordie Barnard, Ann Walters, Rose Mouzan, and Ruby Van Huff. These ladies are regular members of the grading team.

Lessons in the courses are distributed in the HCDC chapel and by chaplains and volunteers as they meet with inmates. Inmates return completed lessons to one of the CJM chaplains. Completed lessons are taken to the grading center each week by a volunteer. Graded lessons are returned to the CJM Lead Chaplain who gives them back to the inmates and awards certificates as appropriate. Inmates who complete all of the lessons are awarded a very nice study Bible.

Sometimes we can even get the graders to take time for a picture. Here (left to right) Nell Matthews, Lynn Faulconer, Ruby Vonhuff, Rose Mouzon, and Andrea Pace pose for a picture in January 2001. Below are a series of snapshots from a recent grading session.
